Travelling as a young adult with a smaller budget can be tough, but oh so worth it. If you’re fresh out of school and are looking to explore the world but feel held back because of the financial burden, here’s five of our top tips on how to save money travelling. Don’t let money be the only reason you don’t get to explore everything the world has to offer.

Tip One: Use a VPN

Save money before your trip by using a VPN from another country when searching and booking your flights. What does this mean and why should I do it? A VPN is a virtual private network, which means changing it means changing your virtual location, which tricks booking sites into giving you lower fares. When you connect to a VPN’s server, your IP address is switched out for one in a different location. This tricks booking sites into thinking you’re browsing from a different location therefore you won’t get inflated fares solely based off of where you are.

Tip Two: Call the Airline

This tip comes from my grandma, a formal travel agent. Call the airline directly to get the lowest fares for the dates you’re looking for! Simple as that.

Tip Three: Money Exchanging

Always exchange your money BEFORE your trip. If you wait until you’re in a touristy location they will jack up the exchange rates tremendously. There is really no “one place fits all” solution to this but the best spots we’ve found are: major banks, post offices, and some hotels! If you have left over cash from your trip, wait until you are home to revert it to your local currency.

Tip Four: Travel Rewards

Take advantage of travel rewards. The younger you start racking up travel points on your credit cards the better! Here is a list of Canada’s 12 Best Travel Credit Cards for 2021.

Tip Five: Off Season Travel

This tip comes with its pros and cons. Yes if you travel during the off season bars and clubs might be a little more empty and the weather might not be exaaactly what you were looking for but… Accommodation is cheaper, beaches are less crowded, it’s less catered towards tourists and can be more authentic, lines are smaller, airfare is cheaper, and DEALS. Off season and shoulder season is always where you will find the best deals on flights, accommodation and activities.
